The Uganda Professional Science Teachers’ Union (UPSTU) has held an induction event for its national union officers at the Nob View Hotel in Ntinda, Kampala. The event aimed to equip the officers with a comprehensive understanding of the union’s constitution, labor conflict management mechanisms, workers’ rights, and compensation, as well as the management and administration of the labor union.
The event began with a presentation by Mr. Elong Vincent, National Chairperson of UPSTU, who provided a general overview of the UPSTU Constitution. Following this, Ms. Nakagga Hilda from the Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Development delivered a presentation on the roles of labor officers, labor conflict management mechanisms, and the protection of workers.
After a brief lunch break, the program resumed with a presentation on the rights of workers, compensation, and the roles of the Public Service Consultative Negotiating Council. The final presentation of the day was given by Mr. Mugaiga Aron Magambo, General Secretary of UPSTU, who discussed the management and administration of labor unions.
To conclude the event, participants were taken on a visit to the new UPSTU head office and secretariat, located at Plot 1B, Commercial Street, Ntinda – Kampala off Gasper Oda Rd. This new facility will serve as the central hub for UPSTU’s operations, providing support and resources to science teachers across the country.
The induction event was a crucial step in preparing the national union officers for their roles and responsibilities within the organization. By providing them with essential knowledge and guidance, UPSTU aims to ensure that its officers can effectively represent and advocate for the interests of science teachers throughout Uganda.
