Understanding the Benefits Risks and Legal Consequences of SACCO Loans| ProDevHour

The Uganda Professional Science Teachers Union (UPSTU) held a ProDev Hour meeting focused on responsible borrowing and understanding the legal aspects of SACCO loans. Counsel Timothy Wamayi, the legal advisor to the SACCO, explained the nature of loans, their benefits, and the risks of borrowing irresponsibly. He detailed the negative effects of over-borrowing, loan default, and the legal consequences, including penalties and property loss. Wamayi emphasized the importance of reading loan agreements, borrowing within one’s capacity, and using funds for their intended purpose. He also outlined the responsibilities of both borrowers and guarantors. During the Q&A session, members asked about insurance coverage for loans in case of death or job loss, the impact of delayed salary deductions by districts, and the handling of interest for early or late payments. Counsel Wamai clarified that insured loans provide security and speed, and that communication with the SACCO is crucial in case of financial difficulties. The conversation ended with a reminder that responsible borrowing strengthens both the individual’s financial future and the sustainability of the SACCO.
