As Uganda’s education system continues to implement the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), the need for structured and meaningful assessment methods has become a top priority for teachers and educators. This week’s ProDev Hour focused on one such critical area: “Assessing and Scoring Project Work in the CBC.”
With project-based learning now an essential part of both lower and upper secondary school curricula, this session offered timely guidance on how teachers can effectively assess student projects not just for their final products—but for the learning process itself.
Key Highlights from the Session:
🔹 Understanding the Four Assessment Stages
Teachers were guided on how to assess each of the four key stages of project work:
- Project Planning – Evaluating how learners conceptualize and organize their projects.
- Implementation – Observing how students interact with resources, overcome challenges, and engage with stakeholders.
- Reporting – Assessing how students document and reflect on their project journey.
- Dissemination – Gauging how confidently and clearly students present their work to different audiences.
🔹 The Teacher’s Role: From Dictator to Facilitator
A strong emphasis was placed on the teacher as a mentor and observer not just a grader. From offering support during planning, to keeping detailed records throughout the project, teachers are encouraged to guide learners toward independence and innovation.
🔹 Scoring with Rubrics and Checklists
The session introduced clear rubric-based assessment methods aligned with the UNEB guide. Teachers were urged to use observation checklists and to share rubric expectations with learners early in the process to ensure transparency and consistency.
🔹 Beyond Assessment: Showcasing Innovation
Teachers were also encouraged to prepare students for broader platforms such as the UPSTU Science Innovation Projects Competition 2025. These exhibitions help students present their work to wider audiences, reinforcing real-world relevance, confidence, and creativity.
Let’s continue to inspire a generation of creators, problem-solvers, and innovators.
