Formative Assessment Strategies During Teaching & Learning | ProDev Session Recording and Slides

On UPSTU ProDev Hour 13/11/2025 we had yet another enriching session for teachers across Uganda—this time focusing on Formative Assessment Strategies During Teaching and Learning, facilitated by Mr Droti Asile James, Curriculum Specialist – Chemistry at NCDC. The session explored practical, learner-centered approaches teachers can integrate immediately into their daily practice to improve engagement, feedback, and learning outcomes.

Formative assessment remains one of the most powerful tools for improving student achievement. Unlike summative assessments that evaluate learning at the end, formative assessment gives teachers continuous insights into learners’ understanding, allowing them to adjust instruction in real time. During the session, participants explored a wide range of techniques including reflective questioning, exit tickets, peer and self-assessment, observation records, digital tools, and feedback models—all aimed at making learning more interactive and responsive.

Teachers appreciated the emphasis on clear learning intentions, purposeful questioning, actionable feedback, and student involvement—key principles that support competence-based education. The facilitator also highlighted practical classroom examples and low-tech strategies suitable for large classes. By the end of the session, participants felt empowered with new strategies to strengthen learner participation, diagnose misconceptions early, and enhance the overall quality of teaching and learning in science classrooms.

To ensure no one misses out, we’ve made the full session recording and presentation slides available below:
