Uganda Professional Science Teachers' Union – UPSTU

UPDATES FROM UPSTU SECRETARIAT & CURRENT ISSUES AFFECTING SCIENCE TEACHERS | ProDev Hour

This was a “ProDev Hour” presentation by Dr. Aron Mugaiga, General Secretary of the Uganda Professional Science Teachers Union (UPUSTU), providing updates to members on the union’s activities and progress from April to September 2026. Dr. Mugaiga reported on major structural achievements including the completion of renovations and 80% furnishing of the new national head office at Makerere Hill, the relocation from Ntinda on July 20th, 2026, and the ongoing Phase 2 construction work including perimeter fencing and gate installation. The presentation covered corporate wear distribution progress, with the first phase completed across multiple regions and a local purchase order issued for 2,000 additional items worth over 200 million shillings to begin Phase 2. Dr. Mugaiga discussed national engagements including participation in International Labor Day 2026 and ongoing advocacy work with government agencies regarding teacher recruitment procedures, salary enhancements, and pension fund management. The union’s professional development initiatives were highlighted, including weekly ProDev Hour sessions, the Science Innovation Project Competition, and plans for a new UPSTU Beacon magazine. Current challenges were addressed, including the surge in science enrollment (80% increase) without corresponding teacher recruitment, leading to increased workload for existing science teachers. Members raised concerns about attendance at these sessions, promotion processes for qualified teachers, and the need for better communication between national and regional secretariats regarding updates and member check-offs.
