During this session of UPSTU’s ProDev Hour, the discussion centered on “Breaking Barriers: Gender-Responsive Pedagogy in STEM Education,” with an enlightening presentation by Jesica Avako, Chairperson of the UPSTU Gender and Women Committee. The session tackled pressing issues surrounding the representation of girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Uganda.
Drawing insights from a 2019 UNESCO report and the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) results, the presentation revealed stark statistics: female entries for STEM subjects remain alarmingly low, with only 6.1% for Physics, compared to significantly higher entries in arts subjects like CRE (61.2%). These numbers highlight systemic barriers such as societal stereotypes, traditional gender roles, teacher biases, lack of role models, and limited access to resources.
Avako also explored solutions through Gender-Responsive Pedagogy—a teaching approach that actively promotes gender equality and equitable learning. Practical strategies included:
- Challenging gender stereotypes by incorporating examples of women scientists in lessons.
- Avoiding gender-biased language and fostering inclusive classroom participation.
- Organizing mentorship programs and STEM clubs to provide girls with inspiring role models and peer support.
- Engaging schools and communities to raise awareness about the importance of gender equality in STEM education.
Participants shared their thoughts on the challenges and opportunities for encouraging girls in STEM, including the importance of career guidance and the visibility of female science teachers in leadership roles. The session concluded with actionable recommendations for teachers, schools, and UPSTU to promote gender inclusion and STEM education.
