Elong Vincent, the National Chairperson of the Uganda Professional Science Teachers Union (UPSTU welcomed everyone to the new year and shared insights into 2025, highlighting the union’s successes and the importance of teamwork and leadership.
He highlighted that UPSTU was founded to restore the lost glory of the teaching profession, and has made significant strides in a short time. He discussed the challenges faced by the teaching profession, particularly in terms of promotion and working conditions, and emphasized the union’s role in advocating for better working conditions and welfare for teachers.
Elong emphasized the importance of science and innovation in driving development and economic growth. He encouraged science teachers to concentrate on their schools and improve delivery and results.
In the meeting, various members raised concerns and questions about their professional development and working conditions. Timothy raised the issue of senior education officers who have been promoted but are not being paid, and the potential invalidation of their appointments after three years. Philips also expressed concern about the non-payment of senior education officers for almost three years. Kokas raised the issue of dropped codes in the membership system, suggesting automation to prevent this. Bro. Kizito discussed the challenges faced by non-licensed teachers and the need for a central discussion on these issues. Elong encouraged the teachers to reach out to the district or regional leadership if they face salary shortfalls and to use the structure in place to resolve such issues. The conversation ended with a prayer and an announcement for the next meeting, where the issues surrounding the SACCO would be discussed.
